Deciding that you want to buy a Havanese puppy can be the easy part, even if you have to spend some time debating all the different kinds of dogs and trying to find the one that works best for you. But the hard work is going to start when you actually bring them home and try to integrate your puppy into your life. Even if your puppy has been extensively socialized to get along with lots of people and other animals, it's still going to be a big shift to bring them to your house. So, what can you do to help your puppy adjust to living in a new home?
Isolate Them
One thing that is going to help them is if you put them in their own room away from the rest of your family for a day or two. This is especially important if you have other animals in your house. You don't want your other animals to be really upset by having this little puppy come into their house and their territory.
If you put your new puppy into their own room, their scent will go through the house, letting other animals get used to it. You can put clothes that you and your family have worn in the room with them, the puppy will be able to get used to the way your family smells. You can also introduce your family members slowly, which will keep your puppy from getting overwhelmed. For the first couple of nights, you can also wrap a towel around a hot water bottle along with something that ticks so that your puppy has something warm and soothing to cuddle with.
Designated Potty Spot
Whether or not your puppy is house trained before you bring them home, you are still going to have to teach them where they can pee when they are at your house. One of the things you can do is to have a designated potty spot for them to go to. Take them to that spot as soon as you get them home and every time you take them out to potty, take them to that spot. Make sure that you praise them well so that they see that area as a positive and keep going there.
